 Sustainable Transport Project PAKSTRAN Receives 11th Annual Environment Excellence Awards 2014

The National Forum for Environment & Health (NFEH) recognized the Pakistan Sustainable Transport (PAKSTRAN) Project for its contributions towards environmental excellence in Pakistan, at the 11th Annual Environment Excellence Awards held in Lahore today.

In appreciation of PAKSTRAN’s efforts in the field of environment and sustainable development, and after careful assessment of PAKSTRAN’s testimonials by NFEH, the distinguished panel of jury unanimously decided to confer the 11th Annual Environment Excellence Award-2014 to the ‘PAKSTRAN’ Project.

Dr. Saleem Janjua, National Project Manager, PAKSTRAN, received the Award on behalf of the PAKSTRAN Project, and after a brief introduction of the project, thanked the organizers for honoring PAKSTRAN with such an award.

Governor Punjab Mr. Chaudhary Muhammad Sarwar was the chief guest on the occasion and lauded the efforts made towards sustainable development and environmental protection in Pakistan.

The Annual Environment Excellence Awards (AEEA), which started in 2003, has become the "benchmark of standards for environment excellence" in Pakistan. These Awards recognize ‘"AEEA Meritorious Performance Leaders’ who run organizations/projects that generate best practices in environmental excellence.

Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhary, Minister for Planning, National Reforms, and Development, stressed that Pakistan boost its presence on the global economic stage and strive towards a brighter future for the coming generations.

PAKSTRAN is supported by Global Environment Facility (GEF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and is being implemented by Government of Pakistan, through the Government of Sindh (Transport Department), Government of Punjab (Urban Unit, Planning and Development Department) and IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature, with the objective ‘to reduce the growth of energy consumption and related greenhouse gas emissions from Pakistan’s transport sector, while simultaneously improving urban environmental conditions and improving Pakistan’s competitiveness’.

About PAKSTRAN
To address the transport and related problems in the country, the Pakistan Sustainable Transport Project (PAKSTRAN) is being implemented by Government of Pakistan.

The objective of the Project is ‘to reduce the growth of energy consumption and related greenhouse gas emissions from Pakistan’s transport sector, while simultaneously improving urban environmental conditions and improving Pakistan’s competitiveness’.

PAKSTRAN is supported by Global Environment Facility (GEF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and is being implemented by Government of Pakistan.

The Implementing Partner is:
i. Government of Pakistan, Ministry of Water and Power.

The Responsible Parties are:
ii. Government of Punjab, through Urban Unit, Planning & Development Division (Component 1 of PAKSTRAN)
iii. Government of Sindh, through Transport Cell, Transport Department (Component 2 of PAKSTRAN)
iv. Planning Commission of Pakistan (partnership decision pending for Component 3)
v. IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, Pakistan (Component 4 of PAKSTRAN)
